Mourinho: Money Makes a Difference - Sky Sport

Jose Mourinho admits Manchester United are struggling to match the financial might of Europe's elite Jose Mourinho says Manchester United are finding it difficult to compete with teams such as Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain because they cannot match their spending power. PSG shattered the world transfer record last summer to sign Neymar from Barcelona for £198m and followed that up  by agreeing a deal with Monaco for Kylian Mbappe worth £166m . Pep Guardiola has overhauled City's squad with 16 new signings since taking over in the summer of 2016, transforming them into one of the favourites for the Champions League alongside PSG in the process. Mourinho has received ample backing in the market from United since succeeding Louis van Gaal, spending £75m rising to £90m on Romelu Lukaku and £93.25m on Paul Pogba , but he feels a more drastic overhaul is required. "It is difficult [to compete] but it is possible," Mourinho,  whose side face

Bordeaux value Malcom at £44m Arsenal have opened talks with Bordeaux over a move for £44m-rated forward Malcom , according to reports. Manchester United are keen on signing the Brazilian but were put off by the Ligue 1’s asking price of €50m (£44m). Jose Mourinho is desperate to add some creativity to his frontline and is expected to bid for the 20-year-old in January but Arsenal have stolen a march on their rivals, according to Goal.  The Gunners opened talks with Bordeaux ten days ago and are likely to place a bid next month. Arsene Wenger is now open to letting Alexis Sanchez leave if a buyer meets the club’s £35m valuation of the Chilean but he wants a replacement in before letting the former Barcelona man leave. Bordeaux would rather hold onto Malcom until the summer, where they’re likelier to generate a larger fee. However, the French club will not stand in the plamaker’s way if he pushes for a move in January and could even request for him to stay on loan fo

I knew and the players knew that West Brom are very dangerous on set-pieces. We controlled the game for a long, long time, then manager Alan Pardew reacts. We had a few chances to kill the game but I knew they would react.” HAPPY WITH THE PERFORMANCE “We played very well and not even the last minutes made me feel that we didn’t play well because that can happen. You play against a team that is very strong

Romelu Lukaku sets Manchester United on victory path at West Brom - The Guardian

Romelu Lukaku rises to head Manchester United’s opening goal at West Bromwich Albion T he chase feels forlorn, and it must be even more dispiriting for  Manchester United  when they play the day after their neighbors have turned in yet another stirring performance, but José Mourinho and his players can at least take some satisfaction from the fact they managed to trim the deficit at the top back to 11 points. Romelu Lukaku , taking his Premier League tally for the season into double figures, and Jesse Lingard got the goals on an afternoon that ended up being nothing like as comfortable as it should have been for United. Mourinho’s side were 2-0 up and strolling to victory when Albion punished their complacency by snatching a late goal through Gareth Barry that set up a tense finale. Man United Fear Zlatan Ibrahimovic will never be the same again after knee KO - The Sun

OLD TRAFFORD chiefs fear Zlatan Ibrahimovic may never be the same player following his horror knee KO. Zlatan Ibrahimovic  has worked hard to get back just seven months after the career-threatening injury suffered in the Europa League quarter-final win over Anderlecht.  But the Swede, 36, has looked a shadow of the player who was United’s top scorer last season with 28 goals from 46 appearances. The veteran striker returned to action on November 18 as a sub in the 4-1 home win over Newcastle. He has made five appearances off the bench in all, totaling 73 minutes, without finding the net. And he made no impression when he was sent on to try and grab a point in last Sunday’s 2-1 derby defeat to City . bra — an unused sub when United labored to a 1-0 win over Bournemouth two days ago — has already defied medical experts to get back to this point. But recovering full match-fitness after such a bad injury is proving another thing and there are concerns at Carrington, whe

Henrik Mkhitaryan last featured as a substitute in United's 1-0 win over Brighton on 25 November Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says "every player has his price", which may pave the way for the January departure of Henrikh Mkhitaryan . The Armenian playmaker has not started a game since the defeat at Chelsea on 5 November and has not been in the matchday squad for the last four games. Mkhitaryan became Mourinho's third signing when he joined from Borussia Dortmund for a £30m fee 18 months ago. But BBC Sport understands there has been a "breakdown of trust". Speaking before Sunday's trip to West Brom, Mourinho said: "If a player is not happy and brings with the request a number we consider good for us, I would never say no. "That is my approach as a manager. Every player has a price." Last January, Mourinho allowed Memphis Depay to join Lyon and Morgan Schneiderlin to move to Everton. He subsequently releas

Jose Mourinho has confirmed defender Eric Bailly has a serious injury. A further update from the club has revealed the Ivory Coast centre-back  Eric Bailly  picked up an ankle problem with his national team and could require surgery. He has been missing since the 1-0 Manchester United defeat to Chelsea at the start of November and it is understood a decision will be taken over whether an operation is required in the next few days. "I think his injury is serious," stated Jose Mourinho , following the 1-0 win over Bournemouth that saw Phil Jones and Chris Smalling paired at the heart of the defense. "I don’t know [how long he will be out] but he is an injury that comes from the last time he went with the international team and then we are trying a conservative treatment. But, if the conservative treatment is not resulting, probably he will have a surgical procedure but let’s wait a little bit more." When asked about the specifics of the injury, Mourinh

The pair won a Premier League title and a League Cup during their time together at Stamford Bridge and Mourinho is desperate to be reunited with his former player. Jose Mourinho sends message to Manchester United fans - Express

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has thanked the Old Trafford faithful. Manchester United secured a 1-0 home win over Bournemouth last night thanks to Romelu Lukaku ’s first-half header. And that result was the perfect way for them to bounce back from Sunday’s defeat to local rivals Manchester City . That 2-1 loss left United 11 points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s Premier League leaders and had all but ended their title challenge. Jose Mourinho believes the club’s supporters deserve credit for backing their team amid the disappointment of the weekend defeat to City. It was difficult after the derby defeat," he told  MUTV . "It was so disappointing in many ways because of the magnitude of the game and we wanted to do more. "We wanted to win the game but, unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. "So we wanted to come out and show a bit of fire and a bit of courage, the players getting on the ball and trying to do something. "It wasn’t pretty at t

Jose Mourinho explains Henrikh Mkhitaryan's Man Utd absence - Sky Sports

Image
Henrikh Mkhitaryan has barely figured for Manchester United in the last six weeks Jose Mourinho said Henrikh Mkhitaryan 's absence from his recent Manchester United squads is because other players are more deserving. Mkhitaryan has failed to make Mourinho's 18-man squad for seven of United's last eight games, with his only recent outing coming as a substitute against Brighton on November 25. Mourinho said his wide range of midfield and attacking options means there is always going to be fierce competition for places on the bench as much as a place in his starting XI. "I can only have six [outfield] players on the bench and I try to have some balance on the bench," Mourinho said. "[Against Bournemouth] I had two defenders and [Daley] Blind who can play in different areas. I had Ashley Young to cover all of the wing and the wing-back position. "I had [Ander] Herrera as a midfield player, Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] as a striker and Marcus [R

Romelu Lukaku squandered Manchester United's best second-half chance against Manchester City Manchester United hitman Romelu Lukaku had a game to forget against Manchester City on Sunday. And former Liverpool defender and ESPN FC TV pundit Steve Nicol has laid into the Belgian, claiming he’s a flat-track bully. Lukaku arrived at Old Trafford this summer in a whopping £75m deal from United’s Premier League rivals Everton. And he hit the ground running in Manchester, silencing the critics that had claimed he was overpriced. Lukaku has since endured a barren run though, netting just twice in 13 games in all competitions. And Nicol has torn into the 24-year-old after he failed to shine in United’s 2-1 defeat to local rivals City. "He didn’t go missing, he was there, front and centre, whether it was defensively, or whether it was attack," Nicol told  ESPN FC TV . "He’s got an opportunity to shut people like me up. "He’s seven yards out, he’

Manchester Derby: "IT WAS A CLEAR PENALTY" said Jose Mourinho - Official Manchester United Website

Jose Mourinho during the Derby Jose Mourinho feels the referee made "a crucial mistake" which proved decisive in Manchester United ’s derby defeat against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. The Reds claimed for a penalty in the 79th minute when Ander Herrera went down under the challenge of Nicolas Otamendi but match official Michael Oliver chose to book the Spaniard for simulation and  City went on to win 2-1 at Old Trafford . Here are the manager's main comments from his interview with Sky Sports and post-match press conference: ‘IT WAS A CLEAR PENALTY’ “Clear penalty. I'm sorry for us, I'm sorry for Michael [Oliver, the referee]; I think he had a good performance but it's a clear penalty. The referee made a mistake, which can happen. Last season we had a similar situation here against Man City - City were winning 2-1 and [the referee] Mr [Mark] Clattenburg didn't see the penalty, [Claudio] Bravo on [Wayne] Rooney, and this one also.
