Man Utd manager Jose Mourinho insists he will be faithful to the club's proud record of promoting youth.
Jose Mourinho insists Scott McTominay has now confirmed his place as a Manchester United first-team player.
The 21-year-old made his first Premier League start of the season against Bournemouth on Wednesday, with Mourinho singling the midfielder out for praise afterward.
The United manager has promised to be faithful to the Old Trafford ethos of promoting from within - and already identified McTominay as the academy graduate who would make the breakthrough this season.
And after watching his assured display in the 1-0 win against Bournemouth on Wednesday, he said the player had proved he was ready to make the step up.
“I didn’t realize that he was young Scott,” said Mourinho. “For me, he is not young Scott anymore - he is just Scott, a player from the first team squad.”
Mourinho has been criticised for his attitude to youth during his managerial career and accused of ignoring homegrown talent.
He has consistently refuted those claims - pointing to players such Alvaro Morata, who he handed a debut to during his time at Real Madrid.
At United, he has made a point of giving chances to emerging talent, with Marcus Rashford figuring prominently and Jesse Lingard handed a new contract last season.
On Wednesday United confirmed starlet Angel Gomes had been given his first professional deal, while Mourinho tried to convince Andreas Pereira to stay and fight for his place this season - only for the midfielder to head to Valencia on loan.
McTominay appears to have been the big winner from Pereira’s departure - featuring six times this season.
United have included an academy player in every matchday squad since October 1937.
Mourinho is adamant he doesn’t want to be the manager to end the club’s proud record.
“I feel it like a way to keep a certain identity of the club,” he told Mirror earlier this year. “To keep that identity means, basically, we should bring a new player from the academy every season.
“To follow a certain pathway is important. I am doing it with McTominay.”
Mourinho will look to further strengthening in midfield at the end of the season, with Michael Carrick expected to leave the club when his contract expires.
But in McTominay he believes he has an option to add depth to the squad, having been impressed with him whenever he’s been handed a first-team opportunity.
“Scott played this season 90 minutes in three different competitions,” he added.
“He played against Swansea in the cup, tonight (against Bournemouth) and Benfica and for the three times, he played 90 minutes - not 87, 89 or 85. Why? Because in every match he was playing really, really well.”
